The evidence is mounting: “Suga” Sean O’Malley is the real deal.

The 25-year old Dana White’s Contender Series alum had shown plenty of sizzle early in his UFC career, but he didn’t yet have the type of veteran name on his resume that indicates he truly could be on his way to the top.

That all changed Saturday night at UFC 250.

O’Malley (11-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) took on his biggest career challenge in former WEC bantamweight champion Eddie Wineland and not only aced the test, but produced a “Knockout of the Year” contender in the process.

A wicked straight right hand did the job at 1:54 of the opening round as O’Malley stayed undefeated.

“I seriously believe I do have the best striking in all of MMA,” O’Malley said afterward.

The fight was contested at a frenetic pace, with Wineland (24-14-1 MMA, 6-8 UFC) using his trademark awkward movement, and O’Malley figuring out his range while adding an occasional spinning kick in the mix.

Then came the moment of truth: O’Malley feinted a left, Wineland bit, and O’Malley followed through with a flawless straight right hand to the jaw, which put Wineland to the mat and ended the bout.

O’Malley’s victory was his eighth first-round finish. Wineland has dropped three of his past four.

The bantamweight bout opened up the UFC 250 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN/ESPN+ and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.
