'Music does bring people together.
It allows us to experience the same emotions.
People everywhere are the same in heart and spirit.
No matter what language we speak, what color we are,
the form of our politics or the expression of our love and our faith,
music proves: We are the same.'

'A person does not hear sound only through the ears;
he hears sound through every pore of his body.
It permeates the entire being,
and according to its particular influence either slows
or quickens the rhythm of the blood circulation;
it either wakens or soothes the nervous system.
It arouses a person to greater passions
or it calms him by bringing him peace.
According to the sound and its influence
a certain effect is produced.
Sound becomes visible in the form of radiance.
This shows that the same energy which goes into the form of sound
before being visible is absorbed by the physical body.
In that way the physical body recuperates
and becomes charged with new magnetism.'
~ from 'Mysticism of Sound' by Hazrat Inayat Khan ~
'I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights;
and you have yours.
But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love,

Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions
in their universality.'

the dust of everyday life.'

is composed of harmony?'

It's an explosive expression of humanity.
It's something we are all touched by.
No matter what culture we're from,
everyone loves music.'
~ Billy Joel ~
'There is no feeling,
except the extremes of fear and grief,
that does not find relief in music.'
~ George Eliot (1819-80) ~
Just as certain selections of music
will nourish the physical body and your emotional layer,
so other musical works will bring greater health to your mind.'

wings to the mind,
flight to the imagination,
and life to everything.'

in fact, nothing among the utterances allowed to man
is felt to be so divine.
It brings us near to the infinite.'

The truest expression of a people
is in its dance and music.

' Music is the art
which is most nigh to tears and memory.
~ Oscar Wilde ~

Music

There's music in the sighing of a reed;
There's music in the gushing of a rill;
There's music in all things, if men had ears:
Their earth is but an echo of the spheres.
~ Lord (George Gordon Noel) Byron
English poet, 1788 - 1824 ~

There is in souls a sympathy with sounds:
And as the mind is pitch'd the ear is pleased
With melting airs, or martial, brisk or grave;
Some chord in unison with what we hear
Is touch'd within us, and the heart replies.
How soft the music of those village bells
Falling at intervals upon the ear
In cadence sweet!
~ William Cowper (1731 - 1768) ~

Music, the greatest good that mortals know,
And all of heaven we have below.
Music can noble hints impart,
Engender fury, kindle love;
40 With unsuspected eloquence can move,
And manage all the man with secret art.
When Orpheus strikes the trembling lyre
The streams stand still, the stones admire;
The listening savages advance,
The world and lamb around him trip
The bears in aukward measures leap,
And tigers mingle in the dance
The moving woods attended as he played
And Rhodope was left without a shade.
~ Joseph Addison (1672-1719)
from 'A Song For St. Cecilia's Day ~

A few can touch the magic string,
And noisy Fame is proud to win them;
Alas for those that never sing,
But die with all their music in them!

Music cleanses the understanding;
inspires it, and lifts it into a realm
which it would not reach if it were left to itself.
~ Henry Ward Beecher (1813 - 1887)
American Congregational clergyman, religious writer and reformer ~

Music was my refuge.
I could crawl into the space between the notes
and curl my back to loneliness.
~ Maya Angelou ~

Quotes Music

'After silence,
that which comes closest to expressing the inexpressible
is music.'
~ Aldous Huxley ~

Its language is a language which the soul
alone understands,
but which the soul can never translate.

Music expresses that which cannot be said
and on which it is impossible to be silent.

Music education is so important, and it can be hard at times to find the right words to express to others about why it matters so much. Sometimes when we don’t know what to say, we can use the words of others who have advocated for music education. These music education quotes are my favorites and I hope they help you to remember the impact you’re making in your students lives every day.

1. Music is part of a complete elementary education

Quotes

“Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them – a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.” – Gerald Ford

Quotes Music And Dance

This quote has always been one of my favorites. I truly believe that musicians make the best employees.While in music class, so much cooperative learning is taking place. These skills truly last with kids for a lifetime.

2. Rhythm and harmony find their way into our students souls

“Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.” – Plato

While every subject at school is so important, music benefits not just the mind. When student’s listen to a piece of music, they can’t help but move to it in someway. Whether they tap their foot, sway to the beat, or close their eyes to take in the sounds, music helps kids feel emotions they may have never tapped into before. They may even catch themselves throughout the day humming a song they learned in music class.

3. Students in elementary music participate in many different ways

“Elemental music is never just music. It’s bound up with movement, dance and speech, and so it is a form of music in which one must participate, in which one is involved not as a listener but as a co-performer.” – Carl Orff
Carl Orff has done wonders for the elementary music community. I love teaching with the Orff approach because children are experiencing music and not just learning it. Children become participants and not just observers. If you’ve been curious about how to teach with the Orff method, these are my favorite ways.

4. Music helps our students make connections

“Music enhances the education of our children by helping them to make connections and broadening the depth with which they think and feel. If we are to hope for a society of culturally literate people, music must be a vital part of our children’s education.” – Yo-Yo Ma

Why is music education so important?How many times have you been asked this exact question? One of the things I love most about elementary music it helps kids to form connections between other subjects. How many of you remember learning a song aboutthe 50 states?I did, and once I learned the song, I immediately could recall every state in alphabetical order.

5. Music education helps create a bright future

“With music, one’s whole future life is brightened. This is such a treasure in life that it helps us over many troubles and difficulties. Music is nourishment, a comforting elixir. Music multiplies all that is beautiful and of value in life.” – Zoltan Kodaly

Kodaly is another music education genius. This quote has always meant a lot to me. I think back to students during my first year of teaching who were struggling in other academic areas. Once they came to music class, they felt a sense of accomplishment and joy. You can read more about how I like to teach using the Kodaly method here.
